Police in India have arrested a rapist who went missing after he was released on bail three months into his sentence for attacking a British woman.

Parbat Singh was arrested in the state of Gujarat and is being brought to Rajasthan, police said.

Singh raped the woman, who cannot be named, at his guesthouse in Udaipur in northern India in 2007.

He was convicted and sentenced to 21 years in prison but released by police in July 2008 when he lodged an appeal.

"Yes, he has been arrested from Gujarat and we are bringing him to Udaipur," superintendent of police, Udaipur, Sajeev Narjari, told the BBC.

Singh's victim was a freelance journalist from London.

He was given his sentence for rape and forced entry after a trial in April 2008, and fined 25,000 rupees ($625; £312).

He was released on bail, even though rape defendants are not allowed bail under Indian law.
