Many dead in Kashmir bus plunge

At least 20 people have been killed and many others injured after a bus plunged into a gorge in Indian-administered Kashmir, officials say.

The accident occurred on the main road in the Doda district, south of the summer capital, Srinagar.

The bus veered off the road as it tried to take a sharp curve, the Associated Press agency quoted police as saying.

India has a high rate of fatal road accidents. Most are blamed on reckless driving and ageing vehicles.

Army helicopters transported the injured to hospital.

As the injured were being taken away, relatives and residents threw stones at officials, complaining of poor local medical facilities, AP reported.
