In the first elections in northern Sri Lanka since the end of the country's civil war, the governing coalition has had mixed results.
It suffered a surprise defeat in Vavuniya, but initial results suggest it won in the region's biggest city Jaffna.
BBC correspondent Charles Haviland was forbidden to travel north for the elections but sent this report from Colombo.
