Hindu pilgrims on their way to Amarnath Cave Shrine on June 21, 2009
A quarter of a million pilgrims have visited the shrine this year

A woman was killed and five others were injured when a helicopter carrying pilgrims to the Amarnath cave shrine in Indian-administered Kashmir crashed.

The woman pilgrim was crushed to death when the helicopter fell on her, police said. The helicopter's five occupants, including the pilot, were injured.

They were being evacuated to the base camp at Baltal for treatment.

The crash has been described as an accident. The famous two-month-long annual pilgrimage began in June.

In the past two decades, militants fighting Indian rule in Kashmir have attacked the Amarnath pilgrims many times and killed a number of them.

A quarter of a million pilgrims from different parts of India have visited the holy cave of the Hindu god, Shiva, in the last three weeks.

The cave temple is situated at an altitude of 4,000 metres.
