Tension has been high in Indian-administered Kashmir in recent weeks

Police in Indian-administered Kashmir have fired tear gas in many parts of Srinagar city to disperse violent protests over the death of a student.

Hundreds of protesters pelted police with stones and set at least one police vehicle on fire. Shops were forced to close and traffic was disrupted.

Asrar Mushtaq went missing on Friday evening. His body was recovered in central Srinagar on Wednesday.

Residents say he was detained by the police, who deny the allegation.

The protests are the latest incident in which crowds have demonstrated against Indian rule in recent weeks.

In the southern town of Shopian businesses shut for a 40th day in protest against the rape and murder of two young women in May.

The authorities have suspended four police officers in connection with the case.

Last week security forces shot dead four civilians in the northern town of Baramullah to quell demonstrations over the alleged molestation of a woman by policemen.
