Indian troops are closing in on the Lalgarh region of West Bengal state, a stronghold of Maoist rebels.
On Thursday, security forces fired teargas and rubber bullets at villagers trying to slow their progress.
Rebels have been entrenching themselves in Lalgarh since November 2008, driving out local police. The state government has called in at least 1000 paramilitary troops to retake the region.
Sanjoy Majumder reports.
