India poll 'an extraordinary event'


Counting has begun in India as the general election in the world's largest democracy finally draws to a close.

Exit polls suggest that the governing Congress Party has a slight edge over the opposition BJP although neither party is expected to gain an absolute majority.

Reporting from Delhi, Chris Morris said it was ''an extraordinary event'' which gave people in India a taste of their democratic system.
