India will be holding elections over the course of one month from 16 April.
BBC News asked people from all corners of the world's largest democracy what they would do if they were prime minister.
GEETA SABA SHINDE, 40+, DOMESTIC HELP, MUMBAI
It is difficult to think of everything that I could do if I was the prime minister. It is a big task!
I feel education is the most important factor in our growth. If I had learnt how to read and write I might have had better chances.
Unfortunately, I could not provide education to my daughters as well. Only my son studied till tenth class. If I could change something, then it would be schooling for every child.
For generations we haven't been able to break the cycle - if people are poor, they don't send their children to school. If children don't go to school, they never get good jobs.
Though we have some farmland in our native village in western Maharashtra, we can sustain it only if some of us work in cities. And we end up employing our children after they become 16, 17. I would have tried to change that.
