Police search for Delhi bombers
![]() Police in the Indian capital Delhi are trying to find out who was responsible for two explosions near a busy market and major tourist area in the city.
At least two people were killed and 12 others when the explosions went off on Sunday evening (local time) near the Red Fort in Old Delhi. It was the fourth such attack this year in the Indian capital. Police said the first blast occurred in a Delhi Transport Corporation bus stop, opposite the Red Fort.
An eight-year old girl and an adult were reported killed. Most of the injured were passengers inside a bus, whose windows shattered with the force of the first blast. Police initially said 10 people were injured, and later revised the figure upwards. At least seven state-run buses parked nearby were damaged, and the area was plunged into darkness as an electric pole was toppled by the force of the explosions. "We have beefed up security in the area following the blasts," said Deputy Commissioner of Police Ashok Chand. There is no indication so far of the cause of the explosion, although police said that materials from the scene had been sent for forensic analysis. Last January, at least 12 people were injured in a bomb blast at the railway station in Old Delhi. According to the Press Trust of India, a police official said they suspect the same people may have been behind the latest blasts because the devices used were similar. |
