India ex-minister given jail term

A court in Delhi has sentenced a former Indian federal government minister to three years in jail for corruption.

The ex-minister, known only as Sukhram, was convicted of amassing a disproportionate amount of wealth while in office.

He served as communications minister in the government of PV Narasimha Rao.

Mr Sukhram, who is 82, said he would appeal and has been released on bail. The court also ordered him to pay fines totalling 200,000 rupees ($4,000).
