Kashmir map

A bus has veered off a mountain road in Indian-administered Kashmir killing at least 18 people, police say.

The bus was travelling from the state's winter capital, Jammu, to Srinagar when it fell into a gorge at Sher Bibi, about 180km (111 miles) from Jammu

Twenty seven passengers injured in the crash have been taken to hospital.

Road accidents are common in India, killing hundreds of people every year. Most accident are blamed on reckless driving, old vehicles and bad roads.

The police said it appeared that the driver had lost control while negotiating a turn on the mountain road leading to Wednesday's accident.
