Indian troops killed in Kashmir

At least five Indian soldiers have been killed in a militant ambush in Indian-controlled Kashmir, the army says.

Two officers were among troops from the Border Roads Organisation killed in the attack in Kishtwar district.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack. Troops have sealed off the area and launched a search operation.

Violence in Kashmir has declined since a 2003 truce between India and Pakistan. India says militants still cross over from Pakistan.

Both India and Pakistan claim Kashmir in its entirety and have fought two of their three wars since independence over the disputed Himalayan region.

Militants have been fighting Indian rule in Kashmir since 1989 at a cost of more than 60,000 lives.
