The Pakistani parliament has passed a resolution urging the government to request a United Nations investigation into the killing of Benazir Bhutto.

The resolution called for investigators to identify the culprits, perpetrators, organisers and financiers.

The former Prime Minister was killed during an election rally last December. Soon after the assassination, President Pervez Musharraf rejected demands for a UN investigation, made by leaders of Ms Bhutto's Pakistan People's Party.

He later invited police from London's Scotland Yard to assist in the inquiry into her death.

The British detectives in their report said they believed she was killed by a bomb blast.

The opposition MPs in the National Assembly and the lower house did not oppose the resolution calling for the UN inquiry, which was passed unanimously.

Parliamentary elections were postponed from January until February, following Ms Bhutto's death in a suicide attack in Rawalpindi on 27 December.

More than 50 people were killed in violent unrest sparked by the assassination.

Ms Bhutto's widower, Asif Ali Zardari, is meeting the former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday, to discuss the "current political situation", according to a spokesman for the PPP.
