Swat bomb attack targets police

A police inspector has been killed in a suicide attack in the district of Swat in north-west Pakistan, police say.

Reports say the attacker scaled a wall into the grounds of a police station in Mingora, the main town in Swat, but was spotted by officers who opened fire.

Police say he then exploded his bomb. Several people were wounded in the blast and taken to hospital.

Fighting between militants and the military began in Swat, once a tourist destination, last October.

Monday's attack took place at about 1900 local time. Police cordoned off the area.
