Eyewitness: Outpouring of grief
![]() Children grieve for their relatives who were killed by gunmen
By Daniel Lak in Chathisinghpora
Well over 1,000 Sikhs from all over the Kashmir Valley had converged on the village of Chathisinghpora to watch the cremations and to mourn with the survivors of the massacre.
The cremations took place in the Sikh temple in the centre of the village known as a gurdwara.
The bodies had been piled up in the courtyard with firewood stacked all around them. Funeral pyres As people brought more firewood and the flames - the funeral pyres - were lit, all sorts of mourning was taking place.
Women were rending their hair in grief, men were screaming, chanting religious slogans and shouting out: "Who has done this? Who has done this to our people?"
At one point, a local television crew was attacked by a mob and their cameras smashed, but things got under control a little bit later and the crowd turned quite welcoming to visiting journalists. Blood stains Just outside the temple was where many of the victims had been shot down and that added to the anger and the emotion. You could still see blood stains on the ground despite pouring rain, and the shoes of the victims standing there against the temple walls. It's still unclear who might have carried this out, although a senior police officer told me it was probably Muslim militants sent over from Pakistan. Local people weren't so sure. They are very angry with the government for what they saw as a lack of security, they said that the government themselves might be responsible. That's very hard to say at this point. |
