Itinerary: Clinton in South Asia

US President Bill Clinton has visited several major cities in India in his historic tour of South Asia, and made brief stop-overs in Bangladesh and Pakistan.

Trace his journey in the itinerary below.

19th March

President Clinton arrives in Delhi. No official engagements.

  • Picture story: South Asia awaits Clinton

    20th March

    Bangladesh visit. Flies from Delhi to Dhaka in the morning. Talks to concentrate on exploiting Bangladesh's vast natural gas resources. Visits planned to village school, agriculture project and health clinic.

  • Clinton pledges aid to Bangladesh

    21st March

    First day of official visit to India. First time in 22 years that a US head of state has visited the country. Ceremonial welcome to Rashtrapati Bhavan in the morning, followed by a visit to Gandhi's memorial.

  • Kashmir killings overshadow Clinton visit

    Official meetings. The president is then to meet Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee for talks to sign a protocol on US-Indian relations. After lunch he will meet President KR Narayanan.

  • India dismisses US fears

    22nd March

    Delhi: Early morning meeting with leader of the opposition, Sonia Gandhi. Breakfast at American Embassy. Address to both houses of parliament.

  • Clinton urges nuclear dialogue

    Agra: Helicopter to Agra for tour of Taj Mahal, speech at environmental meeting, and visit to USAID project in nearby village. Flies to Jaipur for night.

  • Taj Mahal pollution plea

    23rd March

    Tourism day in Rajasthan. Trips to Amer Fort and to Ranthambore to see tigers.

  • Village women enthral Clinton

    24th March

    Hyderabad. Trip to India's cyber-city. Meets state chief minister Chandrababu Naid and addresses IT professionals at a hi-tech park.

  • Clinton warns of cyber-divide

    25th March

    AM: Bombay. Roundtable discussion with young people

    PM: Pakistan. Flies to Islamabad to meet military rulers. Meets Gen Musharraf and addresses the nation.

  • Clinton leaves Pakistan empty-handed
