Jayalalitha will face corruption trial

Jayalalitha: a major setback

By Jyotsna Singh in Delhi

The Indian Supreme Court has ruled that the former chief minister of the southern state of Tamil Nadu, J Jayalalitha, must face trial for corruption in a land appropriation case.

The former chief minister is accused of selling government land at bellow the market price to a company she indirectly owned.

The move is seen as a major setback for the former film star and the leader of the opposition AIDMK party.

She is also facing other corruption charges going back to her tenure as the chief minister.

The Supreme court directive came in response to a petition filed by the government of Tamil Nadu.

Evidences

The government in its petition had challenged a Madras High Court ruling which ordered the case against J Jayalalitha to be dropped.

The High Court had ruled that there was not enough evidence to conduct a trial against her.

The Supreme Court on Friday asked the trial court to go ahead with the case while it is still examing the High Court ruling.

The next hearing in the case has been fixed for three weeks' time.
