At least eight labourers died when a building collapsed in the town of Allahabad, in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, police say.

Dozens of workers are still trapped in the rubble of the multi-storey building which was under construction.

Several seriously injured workers have been admitted to various hospitals, police say.

The army has been called in to help with the rescue work. The cause of the collapse is being investigated.

Police inspector Vashishth Singh Yadav told the BBC that the incident happened at 0645 am local time.

He said the five-storey building in the Civil Lines area has been completely destroyed.

Mr Yadav said army and fire brigade teams are digging through the debris to get to those still trapped.
