Tamil activist killed in Jaffna
A Tamil activist has been killed in northern Sri Lanka, his party says.

Mohammad Basheer was shot dead by two men on a bicycle in the northern town of Jaffna, the People's Liberation Organisation of Tamil Eelam said.

Mr Basheer reportedly died on the spot and a post-mortem is being conducted. It is not clear who killed him.

A spokesman for the party, which opposes the Tamil Tigers, said he suspected the rebels carried out the attack. The rebels have not responded.

A man was also killed in the eastern town of Batticaloa, officials said.
