'Bomber' killed in Afghan attack
A suspected suicide bomber has been killed in an attempted attack on a UN convoy in southern Afghanistan, officials say.

The man is reported to have died after detonating explosives in his car near UN vehicles about 10km (six miles) south of the city of Kandahar.

UN spokesman Adrian Edwards said there were no other casualties reported after the incident near Kandahar airport.

Attacks blamed on the Taleban and their allies have risen in recent months.

QUICK GUIDE

Kandahar is the main city in the south of Afghanistan and is regarded as an area where support for the Taleban is strong.

Western forces - including Canadian and British troops - operate from a base at the city's airport.

The Taleban were forced from power after the US-led invasion of Afghanistan in 2001.
