Indian MP jailed over 1982 rape

An MP has been jailed for 10 years for the gang rape of a woman in West Bengal, eastern India, in 1982.

The prosecution said Bir Singh Mahato led the assault on the woman two days after the men in her family had been detained by police.

The court heard four men ransacked a house in Purulia district, where Mr Mahato is the MP, and gang raped the then 25-year-old woman.

He has denied the charges and will be appealing against the decision.
