An American soldier and a local interpreter have been killed in a bomb attack in southern Afghanistan, the US military said.

The explosive device hit a vehicle travelling within a US military convoy in Uruzgan on Tuesday.

It is not know who carried out the attack, but similar assaults have been carried out by the Taleban.

More than 1,200 people have been killed in violence linked to militancy in Afghanistan this year.
