India-Bangladesh border shooting
An Indian border police official has been killed after an exchange of fire between Indian and Bangladeshi soldiers along their border.

Jeevan Kumar was found dead after the shooting late on Saturday, an official of India's Border Security Force says.

The Associated Press reports that a Bangladeshi girl was also killed.

The fighting broke out after Bangladeshi border guards detained an Indian who they say had crossed into their territory.

But India says the man was on Indian territory when members of the Bangladesh Rifles allegedly dragged him away.

The incident took place in the border between the Indian state of Tripura and the Bangladesh district of Comilla.

India has built a fence along the border but a senior Indian Border Security Force (BSF) official told the BBC that it was located well within Indian territory.

As a result, the official Suresh Kumar Dutt said, many Indian villagers now find their fields are located on the other side of the fence.

There has been no official word from the Bangladesh side as yet.

The incident comes as senior officials of the border police force of both countries are meeting in Dhaka to sort out differences on the border issue.
