New Indian chief justice sworn in
Supreme Court judge, Yogesh Kumar Sabharwal, has been sworn in as the new chief justice of India.

The 63-year-old judge succeeds RC Lahoti who retired on Monday.

Indian President APJ Abdul Kalam administered the oath of office to Justice Sabharwal. He will serve until January 2007.

Justice Sabharwal has said he personally favours abolition of the death penalty but would not oppose it in very rare cases.
