Bollywood actress Nirupa Roy has died after a heart attack at her home in Mumbai (Bombay).
She was 73. Nirupa Roy made her debut in the black-and-white era with the Gujarati language film Ranakdevi, made in 1946.
She played the lead role in a number of films, including Do Bigha Zameen (A Piece of Land).
The actress, who leaves a husband and two sons, died on Wednesday and will be cremated on Thursday.
Later in her career Nirupa Roy went on to play the mother to various leading actors, such as Dev Anand in the film Munimji and to Amitabh Bachchan in a number of successful films, like Amar Akbar Anthony, Deewar, Suhaag and Mard.
