Kalam begins South Africa visit
President APJ Kalam
The president will visit Gandhi's Phoenix settlement in Durban
President APJ Kalam has arrived in Cape Town for the first visit to South Africa by an Indian head of state.

President Kalam will meet his counterpart Thabo Mbeki on Wednesday and address parliament.

He will then fly to Johannesburg and Durban, home to most of the nation's 1.2m ethnic Indians.

The president will retrace the train journey of Mahatma Gandhi, who was removed from a whites-only carriage, sparking his political awakening.

President Kalam will also visit the Phoenix settlement in Durban where Gandhi shaped his policy of peaceful resistance a century ago.
