Dhaka-Delhi in water stalemate
Government officials from Bangladesh and India have ended a first day of talks on controversial Indian plans to divert several rivers, which Bangladesh says could lead to an ecological disaster.

The Bangladeshi water resources minister, Hafizuddin Ahmed, who is at the talks in Delhi, told the BBC the first round of discussions ended without an agreement.

Officials in Dhaka say the plan to link 30 major rivers, and divert their flow from north-eastern India to water-deficient areas in the south-west, would deprive Bangladesh of its fair share of water.

The talks continue on Tuesday.

Bangladesh shares 54 rivers with India, an there's a long history of disputes over water sharing.
