More Afghan troops near border
Afghan officials say they will deploy about 500 additional soldiers near the border with Pakistan, in response to an increasing number of attacks in the area blamed on Taleban fighters.

The security commander in the south-eastern province of Paktika, General Daulat Khan, said the Afghan Government had decided to take control of the Barmal district, which has been the centre of recent fighting.

Afghan government officials say they believe many Taleban fighters - who were ousted from power by US forces two years ago - have been regrouping in the semi-autonomous tribal areas of Pakistan.
