The Indian Defence Minister, George Fernandes, has said that his security forces will give an appropriate response to the increase in attacks by militants in Indian-administered Kashmir.
Speaking during his visit to the region, Mr Fernandes said cross-border infiltration by militants was continuing.
Mr Fernandes met Indian troops patrolling the northern border of Indian-administered Kashmir.
His comments came a day after a group of guerrillas attacked a prominent Kashmiri counter-insurgency officer, Mohammad Yusuf Parey.
The authorities said Mr Parey was killed in the attack, along with two of his associates.
Other reports said he was wounded.
