Reports from Pakistan say officials there have handed over to the American authorities a suspected member of al Qaeda who was arrested last month in the city of Peshawar, near the Afghan border.
Adil al-Jazeeri, who is an Algerian national, is thought to have fled Afghanistan following the fall of the Taleban authorities in Kabul a year and a half ago.
He had been resident in the region for more than 15 years.
Pakistan has arrested hundreds of suspected al Qaeda members since Washington began its campaign against the group following the 9/11 attacks.
A BBC correspondent in Peshawar says that Pakistani officials appear to have upgraded the importance of Mr al-Jazeeri as his interrogation progressed and that he's believed to have been taken to Afghanistan for further questioning.
