Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty's father, wanted for questioning in connection with an extortion case, has had an application for bail rejected by a court in the state of Gujarat.

The move, by a court in the town of Surat, could pave the way for the arrest of the father, Surendra.

His lawyer says he will appeal against the decision to a higher court.

On Thursday Shilpa Shetty's mother, Sunanda, was granted bail by a court in Bombay (Mumbai).

The Bombay court granted her bail until 12 June.

Sunanda Shetty was travelling abroad with her daughter and movie star, Shilpa, at the time the warrant for her arrest was issued.

On Wednesday, soon after returning to Bombay, she asked to be given bail and the judge granted her request.

But he also directed her to appear before a court in Surat in June when her bail application will be reviewed.

Mr and Mrs Shetty were issued with arrest warrants after the Surat police registered a case of extortion against them, following a complaint by an industrialist.

He alleged the Shettys had used criminal gangs to recover the money allegedly owed to them for a modelling assignment done by their daughter, Shilpa.

The Shettys' lawyer, HH Nagi, told the BBC the allegations were baseless and said a large sum of money was owed by the industrialist.
