In pictures: Indian elephant festival
One of India's largest elephant festivals drew crowds in north-eastern Assam state over the weekend. The gathering was aimed at increasing eco-tourism and raising awareness of the elephant's struggle for limited resources with man.
The festival was a colourful affair
Nearly 300 elephants were displayed over twod days
Participants were able to hone their ball skills
Keepers also showed off their control over the beasts
Elephants develop a very close relationship with their mahouts
The event aimed to raise awareness of the elephant's struggle for space
Despite population pressures, elephants remain important in north-eastern India
