Two dead after Kabul attack
German troops surround the area after the attack
Two Afghan interpreters have died a day after they were wounded in a blast in the capital, Kabul.
The attack took place at Camp Warehouse, home to the 22-nation International Security Assistance Force (Isaf), as hundreds of people queued at the entrance to undergo security checks. The attacker, who died during in the explosion on Thursday, had thrown two grenades at the camp gates when he realised he could not get in. A third grenade went off as he held it to his chest. Two French nationals were also injured in the attack, one of them seriously. An explosives team and military police are investigating the attack.
"The indications are that this attack was not the carefully planned and executed work of a professional terrorist organisation," Colonel Samet Oz, a spokesman for Isaf, said. German military squads closed off the main road between Kabul and Jalalabad. About 4,800 Isaf peacekeepers patrol the streets of the capital. Second attack It was the second attack on international forces in the capital in the past two days. On Tuesday, two American special forces soldiers and their Afghan translator were wounded when a grenade was thrown at their jeep as it passed through traffic near the city's Blue Mosque. Two young men were detained over that attack. One told police he was not affiliated to any organisations, but complained that the Americans had occupied his country. The targeting of international personnel has prompted a tightening of security in the city. |
