Kashmir temple reopens
At least 50 people were injured in the siege
A Hindu temple in Indian-administered Kashmir has reopened to the public, two days after an attack that left 14 people dead.
Special prayers were held to purify the complex at the Raghunath Temple in Jammu, which was the scene of a siege between separatist militants and police. A private trust in charge of the temple carried out repair work. India blamed a Pakistan-based militant group, Lashkar-e-Toiba, for the attack. The violence, which came after a brief lull, has put pressure on the new administrations in Pakistan and Indian-administered Kashmir. Temple attack Hundreds of Hindu pilgrims were inside the Raghunath Temple in Jammu when a series of gun battles broke out on Sunday.
Soon after dawn on Monday, security forces came under fire from the nearby Shiv temple and closed in to shoot a third militant dead. Violence returned to Kashmir after a short lull following the appointment of a new government earlier this month. On Tuesday, at least six people died in more violence. Police said separatist militants shot dead three civilians in the district of Budgam, south of Srinagar, the state's summer capital. In a separate incident, three children were killed in a bomb blast in the frontier district of Kupwara. The attacks have put pressure on the reformist Chief Minister, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, who has taken a tough stance against human rights abuses committed by Indian security forces. The violence also threatens to strain relations between India and Pakistan, after a new civilian administration has taken charge in Islamabad. |
