Wednesday, November 18, 1998 Published at 05:24 GMT World: South Asia Tea is for tourism ![]() There are opportunities to explore natural attractions The Darjeeling district of India is trying to make tourism as big an earner as its famous tea. Authorities in the east Himalayan region are holding a three-week festival to promote the area as well as its major export.
About one third of the 10,000 kg produced each year is exported. Now local authorities are keen to create a smooth blend of tea and tourism.
"One of the aims behind this festival is to highlight the year 2000, which we are trying to project as the 'Destination east Himalayas'," he says. "We are trying to attract more and more tour operators and travel writers so that they can see what we have got." The festival includes a cultural programme of traditional arts but also promotes the natural attractions like rafting on the river that runs through the three Himalayan tea regions. Authorities understand the lure of an authentic cup of Darjeeling will be the initial attraction but they believe this festival will stir interest in all the region has to offer. |
