It was not immediately clear what had caused the crash.

However, one report quoted a police official as saying that it appeared the driver had lost control of the vehicle on a steep curve.

It is the second such road accident in Punjab province in less than 24 hours.

Ten people died and 50 were injured when a bus turned over and fell from a railway bridge near the provincial capital, Lahore.

That accident was caused by a burst tyre.

Buses in Pakistan are often overcrowded and driven at great speed.
