The climber, Kaji Sherpa, reached the summit in 20 hours and 24 minutes without supplementary oxygen, according to his sponsors - a Danish brewing company. The previous world record was 22 hours 29 minutes by Frenchman Marc Batard A spokesman for Tuborg Speed Everest Expedition '98 said the 35-year-old from Solukhumbhu in east Nepal reached the top of the 8,848m (29,029ft) mountain on Saturday. He started from base camp on the Nepali side of the peak at an altitude of 5,350m (17,552ft) on Friday and climbed through the night but was forced to stop for two hours after fierce winds. If he had not stopped, he would have come close to achieving his goal of scaling the mountain in 18 hours, the expedition spokesman said. According to the Nepalese Tourism Ministry more than 800 people have now scaled the mountain. |
