Sunday, October 11, 1998 Published at 00:20 GMT 01:20 UK World: South Asia Delhi chief resigns over onion crisis ![]() Spiralling price of onions has sparked protests around the country The top administrator in the Indian capital, Delhi, has resigned following a row over a shortage of onions. The Delhi Chief Minister, Sahib Singh Verma, came in for strong criticism when he suggested that poor people should give up onions - a staple in many Indian households.
Mr Verma's resignation comes in advance of local assembly elections seen as an important test of the Hindu nationalist BJP-led coalition. The party is keen to hang on to control of the administration of the capital. Competition between two women Mr Verma's successor is thought likely to be the current minister in charge of information and broadcasting, Sushma Swaraj. The BBC correspondent in Delhi, Daniel Lak, says her appointment will deprive the government of an active and respected member of the cabinet, but her oratory skills and energy on the campaign trail will improve the BJP's chances in Delhi. Her opponent in the November 25 election is also a woman, Sheila Dikshit of the Congress Party. This is the first time in India that two women have competed for such a high-ranking political post. Mrs Dikshit has also said that she intends to make the economy - including the price of onions - the main plank in her election campaign.
