The largest coalition force assembled so far in Afghanistan - about 1,500 troops in total - is closing in on al-Qaeda and Taleban positions in eastern Afghanistan.

The offensive - Operation Anaconda - is aimed at crushing rebels resisting fiercely in the mountains south of Gardez in Paktia Province.
