In pictures: Assault on al-Qaeda
The largest coalition force assembled so far in Afghanistan - about 1,500 troops in total - is closing in on al-Qaeda and Taleban positions in eastern Afghanistan.
The offensive - Operation Anaconda - is aimed at crushing rebels resisting fiercely in the mountains south of Gardez in Paktia Province.
US helicopters have come under heavy fire from the militants
US ground forces are supported by heavy air strikes
The US-led troops secured an area close to an airfield on the edge of Gardez
The troops rely on pick-up trucks to reach the battle zone
Afghan commanders say the militants are weaker but still defiant
The battle is raging in a remote area near the Pakistan border
