Hundreds of animals, including tigers, elephants and rhinoceroses, have died at Kaziranga National Park in the Indian state of Assam.
First established as a reserve in 1908 under the British rule, Kaziranga was declared a National Park in 1974. Casualties include deer and buffalo The flooding has also affected buffalo, swamp deer, wild boar, Hoolok gibbons and capped languor monkeys. India's Environmental Investigation Agency has launched an emergency appeal for funds.
Carcasses found every day But 35 carcasses have been discovered and park rangers fear they will find more when the waters finish receding.
Poachers have taken advantage of the situation, killing injured and ill rhinos and making off with their precious horns. Rangers have hit back, shooting dead at least one poacher. |
