India's wildlife struggles to cope

Orphan rhinos like this one, born three months ago, have been found in the park

Mike Wooldridge: "The animals have been battling against exhaustion and hunger"
One of the world's most important wildlife reserves has been devastated by floods.

Hundreds of animals, including tigers, elephants and rhinoceroses, have died at Kaziranga National Park in the Indian state of Assam.

Kaziranga lies on the south bank of the Brahmaputra river and was inundated when the river burst its banks during the recent monsoon rains.

First established as a reserve in 1908 under the British rule, Kaziranga was declared a National Park in 1974.

Casualties include deer and buffalo

The flooding has also affected buffalo, swamp deer, wild boar, Hoolok gibbons and capped languor monkeys.

India's Environmental Investigation Agency has launched an emergency appeal for funds.

Debbie Banks: "The rhinos are incredibly endangered"
The agency's spokeswoman, Debbie Banks, said Kaziranga contained 1,064 Indian one-horned rhinos (rhinoceros unicornis), 70% of the world's population before the floods.

Carcasses found every day

But 35 carcasses have been discovered and park rangers fear they will find more when the waters finish receding.

The flooding devastated the rhinos' food supply and there are fears more of the animals will die of starvation.

Poachers have taken advantage of the situation, killing injured and ill rhinos and making off with their precious horns. Rangers have hit back, shooting dead at least one poacher.
