Delays in Delhi as taxis strike

Thousands of people in the Indian capital, Delhi, have been left stranded during a one day strike taxi and auto-rickshaw drivers.

The strike is in protest against a government order to install electronic fare meters in taxis and auto-rickshaws.

A BBC correspondent says the order followed complaints of overcharging by commuters, but drivers say the new meters will cost more and are not tamper-proof.

Delhi's 10,000 buses were running normally but could not compensate for the additional numbers.

An estimated 60,000 auto-rickshaws and taxis have been off the road in response to the strike call.
