Monday, August 24, 1998 Published at 19:07 GMT 20:07 UK World: South Asia Pakistan protests over US 'violation' Up to 80 cruise missiles were fired at Afghanistan and Sudan Pakistan has said it will complain to the United Nations Security Council about a violation of its air space during America's cruise missile attack on Afghanistan. The move has come as the Pakistani authorities say they now have confirmed reports that a missile, fired by US ships from the Arabian Sea, fell inside Pakistan territory, about 280 km from the shore in Balochistan on Thursday last week. A spokesman for the foreign ministry in Islamabad said the missile did not explode, but it proved earlier presumptions by the government that Pakistan's air space was violated during the bomb attack. He did not give more details about the missile but officials in Balochistan have described it as a five feet 10 inch long projectile with American markings inscribed on it. Experts say that if this is a complete device then it cannot possibly be a cruise missile, which is at least three times bigger in size. But the Pakistani government is confident that the missile found in Balochistan is the one fired from the US ships into Afghanistan and its discovery has provided the justification to take the matter to the UN Security Council. Last week, security officials incorrectly reported that an American missile landed in another area in Pakistan killing several civilians. The government sacked its intelligence chief, Manzoor Ahmed, after retracting the announcement.
