Heavy fighting reported in Afghanistan
The Taleban authorities in Afghanistan and their rivals in the Northern Alliance both report heavy fighting in the north-eastern province of Takhar, around the district of Chal.

The alliance said the centre of the district had changed hands several times in the past two days.

The Taleban said it had retaken lost positions there.

The Chal area lies on an important road to the alliance stronghold of Badakhshan - the only province it fully controls.

There have also been reports of artillery exchanges between the Taleban and opposition forces about 60 km north of the capital, Kabul.
