Musharraf: No deal with Bhutto
Soldier on guard
The military have pledged to clean up politics
The Pakistani military ruler, General Pervez Musharraf, has said that the former prime minister, Benazir Bhutto would be locked up if she returned to Pakistan.

. . . Has this nation ever given so much opportunity to anybody and that person failed twice and yet tries to come a third time?

General Musharraf
In an interview with a British newspaper, The Guardian, General Musharraf said Ms Bhutto - who is currently in exile - was accountable to the nation for her misdeeds and legal action would be taken against her.

Ms Bhutto recently said she would return to Pakistan soon, following a Supreme Court ruling in April that her conviction for corruption should be set aside and a retrial should be held.

General Musharraf seized power in October 1999, and has vowed to clean up Pakistani politics and revive the flagging economy.

Presidential role

In the interview, General Musharraf also said that he would not rule out the possibility of carrying on as president after general elections next year.

"If there is a role for me . . . I will have to take it on," he said.

He also attacked Britain's attitude towards Pakistan, describing Foreign Secretary Robin Cook as biased.

"One expects the foreign minister of Britain to have unbiased views, especially over the Kashmir dispute, which I think was created by Britain originally."

He has promised to hold such an election by October 2002 - the deadline set by Pakistan's Supreme Court.
