Hindu nationalists seek McDonald's shutdown
Hindu nationalists are demanding the closure of all Indian branches of the burger giant, McDonald's.
A Shiv Sena spokesman said they refused to accept McDonald's assurance that no beef or other animal extracts were used in its french fries sold in India. Dozens of Shiv Sena supporters demonstrated outside McDonald's regional headquarters in Delhi, calling for government action. Their protest follows legal action in the United States, where the burger chain has been accused of using beef fat in its french fries - more than a decade after saying it would cook them in vegetable oil. McDonald's have nearly 30 outlets in India, selling chicken, lamb and vegetarian products. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
