Bangladesh's Ershad released on bail

Bangladesh's former military ruler, Hussain Mohammed Ershad, who has been in jail facing corruption charges, has been released on bail after his lawyers said he was too ill to stay in custody.

Mr Ershad seized power in an army coup in 1982 but was forced out by mass demonstrations in 1990.

The former president has already served jail terms for corruption and has been in custody since November awaiting the outcome of further corruption charges against him.

He was transferred to a hospital jail cell two weeks ago.
