Sri Lankan monks protest

Hundreds of Sri Lankan Buddhist monks have been demonstrating against the destruction of Buddhist statues in Afghanistan.

The organisers of the protest, the All-Ceylon Congress, called on all religious people, and even atheists, to rally round to protect a world heritage.

The group said the United Nations had a responsibility to ensure there is no further damage by the Taleban authorities to Buddhist archaeological sites.

A BBC correspondent in Colombo says that some of the monks also complained that the government of Sri Lanka itself had not done enough to protest against the destruction.
