Indian unions protest against power plant

Labour unions in India's western state of Maharashtra have begun a protest march against a multi-billion dollar power plant set up by the American company, Enron.

They plan to march three-hundred-kilometres to the port town of Dabhol, where the station is located.

The protestors say they want to draw attention to the high electricity prices expected to come into effect once the second phase of the Dabhol project becomes fully operational later this year.

Maharastra's state government says it wants to re-negotiate the terms of the deal.

Enron officials say they oppose any substantial re-negotiation.

They say the huge investment the company has made in the project justifies somewhat higher prices.
