Appeal for Afghans in Pakistan

There have been new appeals for help for nearly six-thousand Afghan refugees who have fled from the northern provinces of Afghanistan into Pakistan.

They are living in the Jalozai camp, about twenty-five kilometres north-east of Peshawar.

A doctor working for the UNHCR at the camp says that about fifty children have died of pneumonia and diarrhoea in the past three months, due to inadequate shelter and food.

The UN says that some thirty-five thousand Afghan refugees have arrived in Pakistan in the past three months -- driven from their homes by the continuing fighting between the ruling Taleban and its rivals.
