Indian police seize uranium

Indian police say they've seized twenty-six kilogrammes of low-grade uranium in the southern city of Hyderabad, and arrested two men who were trying to sell it.

They say the two men acquired the uranium when they bought a heap of scrap from a private hospital two years ago.

It had been used to treat cancer patients, and should have been returned to the Atomic Research Centre in Bombay.

The hospital, however, has denied any wrongdoing, saying it sold the uranium as scrap only after getting permission from the Indian authorities.

The state-owned Nuclear Fuels Complex in Hyderabad, where low-grade uranium is refined, said the uranium was depleted -- and so only slightly radioactive.
